The deep waters and rugged beaches of the Pacific Northwest are notoriously stormy in the winter months, especially during the King Tides. Storms are born in the south Pacific and can send big swells sweeping northeast for thousands of miles toward our coast. These big swells turn into big waves as they approach the shore, churned by high winds, which crash into the beaches and rocks that line the coast.
